THE WYCH ELM PROJECT

BACKGROUND

In 2003 the Botanics felled a magnificent wych elm, Ulmus glabra, as it had become infected with Dutch elm disease. Working together with Scottish furniture makers, the Garden has launched the Wych Elm Project, which both celebrates and highlights the plight of one of our largest and best-loved trees. The Wych Elm Project will culminate in an exhibition of hand-crafted furniture and other objects and the commissioning of these works is currently underway. The project will document the commissioning process from sawmill to home thorough a book and film that will also tell the wider story of the natural history, uses and folklore of this most Scottish of trees.
