I grew up in the second half of the 20th Century when cold war and nuclear holocaust never seemed far from the news. Even in a largely secular world the human condition seems to require an impending Armageddon for survival. Why this should be I cannot understand.
My grand-parents generation experienced a real Armageddon , i.e. The First World War. My parents lived through the Second World War (my father fought in Burma).
The 21st century sees an unfolding confrontation between Islam (the crescent moon) and the West. There is a huge race for economic growth and increased competition for dwindling world resources taking place. As if this was not enough we face the spectre of man made global warming.
Well I could not resist putting this famous quote from Robert Burns’ poem ‘To a mouse’ on the back of this chair.
Whilst being serious it has a playful connotation. This is the chair worrying about those that might sit in it.
