SONG FOR WHIN: 2001
Striped ebony with boxwood catch. Scots gorse top.

Part of 'song cycle' series.

Whin is the Scots word for gorse and this piece came from the Eildon hills in the Scottish Borders. Gorse has a distinctive diamond pitting on its branches and these are thought to be the source of the patterns found on gothic cathedral pillars. I carefully removed all the bark, dried the branch and polished it before mounting.

A special method of cutting the wood results in the grain pattern flowing unbroken round the sides of the box.
