My starting point for these shelves was the Hebrides. I was intending to make a simple set of shelves as would have been found in a Hebridean croft house.
My thought process was hijacked by lighthouses. A few years ago I visited Tiree and went to a place called Hynish. A dock with sluice, and accommodation for workmen were built at Hynish by Alan Stevenson. This was his base for the construction of the Skerryvore lighthouse. Everything is still there as good as the day it was built.
I also have visited Erraid - a tidal island off the tip of the Ross of Mull - which was the base for the construction of the Dhu Heartach lighthouse by Thomas Stevenson.
Robert Louis Stevenson rebelled against becoming an engineer and became one of Scotland's greatest writers. The great divide between art and science could not be reconciled - but what a phenomenal contribution both sides of the divide made.
